A transient faces charges that he entered an Iowa City restaurant, pulled out a knife, and threatened to stab an employee in the heart.
Iowa City Police were called to Orchard Green on South Gilbert Street just before 5pm Tuesday for an intoxicated subject threatening a woman while displaying a switchblade. The alleged victim told investigators that 58-year-old Brett Ayers was told to leave the business when he opened a knife and told her he would stab her in the heart. He then walked away before officers could arrive.
Police located Ayers inside another nearby business. He allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication, admitted to being drunk and refused breath testing. Ayers was in possession of a knife fitting the description given by the restaurant employee and admitted to displaying the weapon because someone had made him angry. He’s charged with Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon and Public Intoxication. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in prison.
