It’s been two weeks since the University of Iowa held in-person classes, but COVID-19 cases are back on the rise among UI students and staff.
According to the latest numbers released Friday, 22 new COVID-19 cases have been reported among UI students since Wednesday. That’s up from ten during the same time last week, but down from 50 two weeks ago. It’s also down from the 30 cases reported between Monday and Wednesday. A total of 2,734 cases have been reported among UI students since the fall semester began.
The number of COVID-19 cases among UI staffers has held relatively steady, with nine new cases reported between Wednesday and Friday. There were eight new cases reported one week ago. An even 300 staffers have reported testing positive for the disease since the fall semester began.
Last spring university officials announced that because of the pandemic, all classes would move to online-only following Thanksgiving break. Despite the winter break, there are still over 2,000 students currently in UI residence halls, which is about 45% of those who began the year there.
Zero residence hall occupants are currently under quarantine and three are in self-isolation. Quarantine is used to keep someone who might have been exposed to COVID-19 away from others, while self-isolation is used to separate people infected with the virus from people who are not infected.
