An overnight fire on the northeast side of Cedar Rapids has displaced a family.

According to a release from the Fire Department, crews were sent to the 1500 block of Havenwood Court Northeast on a report of an attic fire around 1:15am Thursday. The occupants indicated they were exiting the home.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire on the exterior near and around the chimney. They were able to knock the outside fire down, then discovered fire in the interior of the attic and extinguished it. Crews had the fire under control within about ten minutes.

None of the four occupants, two adults and  two children, were injured. Moderate fire damage was noted in the area around the chimney, both in the attic and on the roof. The home suffered moderate smoke and water damage on the first floor and basement; crews were able to place tarps down to protect most of the home’s belongings from water and debris.

There is no dollar estimate for the damage; the incident remains under investigation.

It was the second fire of the evening; early Wednesday night crews were dispatched to a 3-story home on the southeast side. A report of a heavy fire on the outside of a home on 17th Street Southeast came in just after 6:30pm. Arriving crews were able to get the exterior fire under control quickly, but it had spread inside the eaves and adjoining walls. Due to the size of the house, two more fire engines were dispatched. The main fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes, but it took about two hours to fully extinguish the fire and remove the smoke from the structure.

Four adults were home at the time, but none of them were injured. There was extensive fire damage to the second and third floors, with moderate damage on the main floor. The entire structure suffered extensive smoke and water damage. The incident remains under investigation.
