The City of Iowa City has issued updated guidelines on what plastics can be recycled, and now say that due to the pandemic, certain containers will no longer be accepted.
In a release from the city, they will not accept “clamshell” plastic containers mainly associated with food-to-go. They say that the coronavirus pandemic has caused a significant increase in the use of the containers. Those containers are of lower-grade plastic quality, and were acceptable because they were such a small percentage of the overall recycled plastic mix. Now that those levels have started to negatively impact the quality of materials processed by plastic recycling companies, the City will no longer accept them.
The city suggests that you reuse the containers for leftovers or use them to package holiday cookies for deliveries.
