A suspect on probation for a handful of convictions has now been charged with assaulting his live-in girlfriend.

According to the probation complaint, 23-year-old Jamaal Brooks allegedly committed the act on November 16th. He reportedly struck the woman 15 to 20 times in the face and head, causing bruising,  bleeding and swelling to her face. He’s also accused of kicking her in the stomach several times before taking her cellphone and fleeing the area.

A warrant was issued for his arrest on Tuesday, and he was taken into custody Thursday morning. He’s to be charged with two counts of Assault with Intent to Commit Serious Injury, and could be sentenced to up to four years in prison if convicted.

Brooks was convicted in July of 2019 on a Solicitation to Commit a Felony charge from December 2018. He was given a five year suspended sentence. The same month he was sentenced, he allegedly was involved in a fight at the Iowa Lodge on the Coralville Strip. Brooks tried to flee, but was apprehended. They allegedly found a pistol in his backpack, along with brass knuckles and marijuana in his front pockets. He also tossed a folding knife into nearby bushes as he was fleeting.

Arresting officers learned that Brooks was wanted for a theft the month before at the UI Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, when he and a female went through the respective men’s and women’s locker rooms and later using a reportedly stolen credit card at the Iowa City Walmart.

He was convicted of Carrying Weapons, Unauthorized Use of Credit Cards, and 3rd Degree Theft  in those cases and again given a suspended sentence and probation.

If Brooks is resentenced on the suspended sentences, another 11 years could be added to his prison time.
