An Iowa City man faces armed robbery, forgery and other charges after allegedly trying to use counterfeit bills to purchase a pair of shoes.

North Liberty Police say 20-year-old Saivon Lester of Benton Drive met the alleged victim at an address on West Lake Road just after 12:45 Wednesday morning and attempted to buy a pair of shoes using counterfeit $100 bills. Lester then allegedly produced a firearm, pointed it at the victim, threatened to shoot the person and left with some of the victim’s personal property.

North Liberty Police pulled over Lester’s vehicle a short time later. They found the stolen property, 27 counterfeit $100 bills and what appeared to be a 9mm handgun in his underwear.

Police say Lester gave them another person’s name and date of birth when being questioned. His real identity was only learned when he was booked into the Johnson County Jail. During the booking process, three alprazolam pills were found on his person.

Lester is charged with 1st Degree Robbery, Forgery, Carrying Weapons, Malicious Prosecution and Possession of Contraband in a Correctional Facility. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 38 years in prison.
