An Iowa City man was arrested early Sunday morning on charges stemming from an alleged assault earlier this month.
Police say the incident occurred the afternoon of November 7th in the 600 block of East Washington Street, where a large tailgate-type party was taking place. 22-year-old Ethan Shafer of Byington Road was seen by witnesses walking up to a man at the party and sucker punching him. He then asked the victim if he was a certain name, to which the victim replied “yes,” and Shafer then left the area.
The victim suffered a broken mandible in four places and a lost tooth; he required surgery at a local hospital. Shafer refused to speak with law enforcement.
A subsequent investigation found that the two had been in an altercation a few days prior at a local bar, and that Shafer was in a relationship with the victim’s former girlfriend.
Shafer was charged with Assault Causing Serious Injury, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted. He posted bond and was released Sunday morning.
