A Davenport man who allegedly recorded his girlfriend having sex with others is accused of brutally beating her.
Police say the incident occurred on the 1100 block of 3rd Avenue in Iowa City. They say that at approximately 1am Thursday, witnesses observed 61-year-old Victor Simpkins punching and kicking the woman and dragging her into a shared restroom while continuing to kick her.
At about 10pm Thursday, the woman went to witnesses to report the incident and ask for help. Arriving police reportedly found her severely beaten to the point of being almost speechless and unaware of her surroundings. She couldn’t recall when she had been beaten.
Officers noted the numerous injuries, including two black eyes, cut lips with dried blood, and an injury to her bottom lip where it had been almost severed from her bottom teeth. She also gestured towards the injuries and bruises on her legs. She also alleged that she had been choked to the point of unconsciousness as well.
Upon speaking with Simpkins, he reportedly admitted that he had been in an argument with his girlfriend the night before. He said the two were arguing over what he suspected was her cheating on him. Simpkins explained that he had lived with the woman for about eight months and the two have been in a romantic relationship for about a year. He also admitted that he recorded her while he was absent on three separate occasions to catch her cheating on him. He also allegedly admitted to having recordings of the woman having sex with others, and they were the motivation for his beating her.
Simpkins was arrested. He faces 3 counts of mechanical eavesdropping, false imprisonment, domestic abuse assault with intent or display of a weapon, and domestic abuse assault impeding airflow. If convicted on all charges, Simpkins could be sentenced to up to eleven years in prison.
