A Coralville man was taken into custody Wednesday night after damaging an apartment hallway and endangering his sister’s child.

Police say the incident occurred on the 600 block of East Burlington Street in Iowa City at around 10:35 pm. 25-year-old Devontae King allegedly used a baseball bat to bang on the reporting party’s door. He’s also accused of hitting the drywall next to the door three times, causing about $500 in damage.

While committing the alleged offense, King is also accused of leaving a child unattended in an entryway. When officers arrived, King was nowhere near the child.

He reportedly admitted to having several drinks and leaving the child unattended while he went across the street to “use the bathroom.” Police say King was in sole possession of the child, who belongs to his sister.

King was charged with Child Endangerment and 4th degree Criminal Mischief. He could be sentenced to up to three years in prison if convicted on both charges.
