Record number of Iowans cast votes in General Election

A record number of Iowa voters have made their voices heard in the 2020 general election.

For U.S. Senate, in a race that saw hundreds of millions of dollars poured into the campaigns of Republican incumbent Joni Ernst and Democratic challenger Theresa Greenfield, Ernst held on to her seat 53-47 percent.

In U.S. House District 2, which includes Johnson County, is too close to call. Just 282 votes separate Marionnette Miller-Meeks and Rita Hart,

In U.S. House District 1, which includes Linn County, incumbent Abby Finkenauer was unseated by her Republican challenger, Ashley Hinson by 51-49 percent.

In U.S. House District 3, Democrat Cindy Axne held her seat, defeating challenger David Young 51-49 percent.

In U.S. House District 4, the biggest runaway in the House races, Republican Randy Feenstra easily defeated his Democratic challenger, JD Scholten, 62-38 percent.

In the hotly-contested Iowa House District 73 race, incumbent Republican Bobby Kaufmann defeated  Democratic challenger Lonnie Pulkrabek by a 60-40 percent margin. Democrats Dave Jacoby and Amy Nielsen ran unopposed in their districts.

And the three incumbents for the Johnson County Board of Supervisors…Democratic incumbents Lisa Green-Douglas (62%), Rod Sullivan (59%) and Royceann Porter (55%)…easily defeated Republican challenger Phil Hemmingway (33%).

 

In Linn County, Republican Louis Zumbach defeated John Stulke 52-47 percent to get a seat on the Linn County Board of Supervisor.

 

And in Cedar County, Republican Jeff Kaufmann retained his seat as Cedar County Supervisor.

 

Donald Trump took the state with just under 140,000 more votes than Joe Biden, getting 53 percent of the vote. Kanye West, who was able to get on the ballot, got 3202 votes statewide, more than the candidates in the Alliance Party, Green Party, Constitution Party, and Geneology Know Your Family History Party.

 

A record amount of Johnson County voters cast ballots this year. County Auditor Travis Weipert says 84,108 ballots were cast this year, a voter turnout of 86.05%. Both Linn and Johnson counties favored the Democratic presidential, US Senate, and House candidates who went down to defeat.
