Iowa voters are expected to cast ballots in record numbers for an election that will determine competitive races for president, U.S. Senate, U.S. House and state Legislature.

For more than half of those registered, it’s already job done, as early and absentee voting has set a record.  Early voting has been gaining in popularity for years, and the movement was turbocharged this year by concerns about voting at polling places at a time when coronavirus cases continue to increase.

In Iowa, 64% of active Democratic voters and 42% of Republicans requested an absentee ballot. Nationwide, early voting has reached three-quarters of the total votes cast four years ago.

Both Iowa City and Coralville are offering free bus rides today. Shuttles have been added to get voters to two polling locations not on the City’s bus routes: the Terry Trueblood Recreation Center and Alexander Elementary School. Shuttles will run every 30 minutes and you can get a list of shuttle stops at icgov.org/transit or by calling 356-5151.

In Coralville, the new bus schedules and routes began on October 19th, so check the website for the new information at coralville.org or by calling Coralville Transit at 248-1790 for assistance.

Advocates for Social Justice and Democracy Defenders are offering free Uber vouchers to all Iowa voters. A link to download the voucher is available at r.uber.com/r_ijw60lfkf0.

And the Corridor Community Action Network will pay for cab rides for those who don’t have a smartphone to get the free Uber voucher. Call Iowa City Yellow Cab at 338-9777 and request a CCAN Voter Ride to and from the polls.
