A Coralville man was taken into custody after causing a disturbance and damaging items in a retail establishment.

Police say 18-year-old Demetrick Byars of Boston Way entered the Bliss Cups Frozen Yogurt store on the Coralville Strip the evening of October 21st. He’s accused of yelling at workers and bystanders. He also allegedly grabbed the hand sanitizer station and threw it across the room, hitting a chest freezer.

Byars was identified by an officer on scene who had prior incidents with him. Video footage was shown to the officer of the incident.

The sanitizer station and chest freezer have a combined value of over $400.

A warrant was requested for Byars’ arrest, and he was booked at the Johnson County Jail Monday morning, charged with fourth degree Criminal Mischief. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to a year in jail. He was released later that day. A preliminary hearing will be scheduled at a later date.
