A North Liberty police chase ended Saturday night with an Iowa City man crashing his car into a business sign.

North Liberty Police were called to Diventures on Penn Street just before 10pm for a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot. When approached by an officer, the driver, identified as 32-year-old Rashaud Lee of Lakeside Drive, allegedly refused commands to turn off his 2015 Chevy Malibu. Instead, police say he fled at a high rate of speed, reaching up to 80 miles per hour in a 25 mile-per-hour zone. While being pursued by a police car with its lights and siren activated, Lee allegedly blew through a stop sign before losing control of his vehicle, striking a raised curb and crashing into a business sign. He was captured after a brief foot chase. Police later learned Lee is barred from driving until March 27th, 2021.

Lee was arrested and charged with Reckless Driving, Driving While Barred, and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months behind bars.

Lee has a lengthy criminal history. In 2019 Lee was sentenced to community service after allegedly stealing a credit card from a customer while working at the Wendy’s drive-thru in Iowa City, then using it for various purchases at Delimart on Lower Muscatine Road and the HyVee Gas Station on Stevens Drive.
