Spray-painted white supremacist messages were found in City Park over the weekend.

The Press-Citizen reports that Iowa City Police were alerted to the graffiti Saturday morning, and discovered the messages in several areas of the park, including the festival stage.

Little Village magazine broke the story Saturday, saying one of the massages featured a Nazi swastika and the message, “We are everywhere, voting will not remove them.”

Parks and Recreation Department director Juli Seydell Johnson said it’s not an isolated incident. When graffiti is found, staff reports the incident to police and then clean or cover them up. When the graffiti is linked to white supremacy or other hate groups, officers document the incident with photographs and launch an investigation.

Iowa City Police Captain Denise Brotherton told the Press Citizen when asked if white supremacists are considered a threat in the area that intelligence information is confidential, but the department considers all hate groups a threat.
