National Coming Out Day was Sunday, but a Cedar Rapids man literally tried to stay in the closet last week after allegedly violating a no-contact order.
Iowa City Police were called to Synchrony Services on Southgate Avenue just before 10:30pm on October 8th for a man trespassing on the property and entering an apartment. Staff advised arriving officers that video surveillance showed 24-year-old Austin Cottrell of 29th Avenue Drive SW walk in the front door of the facility, then enter the apartment of a woman with whom he has a no-contact order.
Investigators entered the apartment and found Cottrell hiding in a closet. Police say Cottrell refused to show his hands or exit the closet. He was eventually dragged from the closet and allegedly resisted being handcuffed. He was arrested and charged with Interference with Official Acts and violating a no-contact order. If convicted on the interference charge, he faces a maximum of 30 days in jail.
