A Muscatine man was taken into custody Sunday morning after being found asleep behind the wheel in Coralville.

According to police, they were dispatched to the 400 block of 5th Street for a white Volkswagon Jetta revving its engine just before 5:20am. Upon arrival, they found the vehicle, with 25-year-old Isaiah Sanchez behind the wheel, asleep.

Police tried to wake Sanchez by repeatedly knocking on the window to no avail. After literally shaking the vehicle, Sanchez reportedly came to. When asked for his identification, Sanchez first produced a debit card before handing his Iowa ID card over. While speaking to him, the officer could detect the odor of ingested alcohol. Sanchez allegedly said that he was the designated driver and had his last drink at midnight.

A field sobriety test was conducted, showing impairment. He refused a PBT, but agreed to a Datamaster test post-arrest. The test reportedly showed a blood alcohol level of .116 percent.

A check of Sanchez’s criminal record showed a previous OWI from Las Vegas in 2016. He was charged with his second offense, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a sentence of up to two years if convicted.
