Iowa City Police say a Cedar Rapids man stole a motorcycle two years ago and traded it for a bus.

44-year-old John Herrington of 3rd Avenue SW was booked into the Johnson County Jail at 12:11 Saturday morning. According to arrest records, just after 8:30am on December 1st, 2018, officers responded to 2719 Wayne Avenue for a truck and trailer stuck in a backyard. Arriving officers found Herrington in the truck attempting to drive away. The resident told police the trailer belonged to Herrington but the contents did not. The contents were removed and Herrington left the scene with his truck and trailer.

After Harrington left, the resident noticed her husband’s 2001 Ultra motorcycle was missing. It had been parked in the driveway next to Herrington’s trailer, and she noted Harrington had been left alone at the residence unsupervised for “quite some time” before officers arrived.

The husband claimed Herrington had previously threatened to steal the motorcycle. Herrington denied committing the theft.

In September of 2019 the stolen motorcycle was recovered in Sanborn in northwest Iowa. A man said Herrington had traded him the motorcycle for a bus, but he became suspicious when Herrington failed to produce a title. The sale was arranged on Facebook, and police obtained a warrant to procure the social media entity’s records. Those records show Herrington arranging the trade, as well as several photos of the motorcycle including the vehicle identification number.

The motorcycle is valued at between $3,000 and $10,000. Herrington is charged with 2nd Degree Theft, a Class D Felony punishable by a maximum of five years in prison.
