The Iowa City Community School District will stick with part-time in-person instruction, and will also follow quarantine guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control, in contrast to Governor Kim Reynolds and the State Department of Education.
According to the Iowa City Press Citizen, the ICCSD’s 14-day positivity rate is at five percent, well below the ten percent level that the district has said would prompt them to apply for another waiver to hold classes online-only.
Three weeks of online-exclusive classes ended on September 28th, as the district went to their hybrid learning program. Earlier this week, the district’s data dashboard showed 15 students and five staff with active COVID-19 cases. 48 other students and 11 other staff members were quarantined due to exposure.
During the district’s board meeting Tuesday, the Chief Operating Officer Chace Ramey said officials aren’t aware of any COVID spread inside school buildings since the 28th.
The district will continue to follow quarantine guidelines from the CDC, even though state officials say it’s no longer necessary for those exposed with an infected person to quarantine for 14 days as long as both individuals were masked during the exposure.
Iowa has yet to issue a mask mandate, either in public or inside schools, despite urging from the CDC to do so.
