Coralville felon arrested after being found with firearm

A Coralville man who has a felony conviction on a burglary charge was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly being found with a firearm.

North Liberty Police say 23-year-old Arthur Kirksey was stopped for speeding around 9:45pm on the 500 block of Ranshaw Way. An odor of marijuana was reportedly emanating from the vehicle.

According to the report, a loaded 9 millimeter handgun was located in the rear passenger seat, and Kirksey allegedly had nine millimeter ammunition in his pocket.

Kirksey’s felony stemmed from an altercation in downtown Iowa City in June 0f 2015. He pleaded down attempted murder and 1st degree robbery charges to 2nd degree burglary and was sentenced to ten years in prison in March of 2016. Charges of participating in a riot and two 3rd-degree robbery charges stemming from an incident in November of 2017 were dismissed by the court.

Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon is a Class D Felony. If convicted, Kirksey could be sentenced to five years in prison.
