A Sixth Judicial District Judge has ruled that evidence of searches of pornography and research on hidden cameras and voyeurism will be allowed at next month’s trial for an Iowa City architect.
68-year-old Robert Carlson of Carlson Design Team has been charged with 22 counts of invasion of privacy in the case..
Judge Deborah Minot rejected attorney Leon Spies’ claims that Carlson’s internet searches of website visits were not relevant. She did say that prosecutors must prove that Carlson had motive and intent.
Carlson reportedly viewed and videotaped employee Jessica Clark while she was pumping breast milk in a conference room. Evidence suggests that Carlson used multiple devices to access, record, store and view internet websites related to adult pornography over a period of years. He also allegedly researched voyeurism and hidden cameras, which prosecutors say shows planning and intent to record Clark surreptitiously while she pumped breast milk in a conference room.
Clark noticed that Carlson would use the room immediately before she went in, and in December of 2018 searched the room and found a pen sticking out of a portfolio laying next to where she sat. She thought it was a camera, searched for information about “spy pens” on the internet, inserted the pen into a tablet in the conference room and discovered images of her pumping breast milk.
Authorities executed a search warrant and seized devices that reportedly contained 22 videos of Clark.
The case is scheduled to go to trial on November 3rd.
