An Iowa City woman was taken into custody Sunday morning, accused of hitting a man with a rubber mallet.

Officers were dispatched to a home on the 1400 block of Esther Street for an unknown problem. Callers had stated that a female was trespassing and assaulted a man with a rubber mallet. The woman, identified as 36-year-old Sharika House of Sylvan Glen Court, had left the scene by the time officers arrived.

Police made contact with House a short time later. She allegedly admitted to hitting the man with a mallet, and stated that he had just assaulted her niece. The man, identified as 21-year-old Tramon Robinson, was injured in the reported attack and had to be transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

The alleged assault between Robinson and House’s niece started during an argument the same morning. Robinson is accused of ripping pictures off the wall at the house they have shared since July, which caused the niece to grab him to keep him from damaging her stuff. He allegedly punched her in the face, causing her mouth to bleed. Robinson reportedly admitted to the incident, saying he did it to “get her off me.”

House was arrested and charged with Assault with Intent to inflict Serious Injury, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison term of up to two years if convicted.

Robinson was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
