An Iowa City woman was taken into custody this week after a physical altercation with her mother.

Police were called to the 2100 block of Bancroft Drive just after 7pm Tuesday. It’s alleged that 19-year-old Katlyn Howard of Tofting Avenue got into a verbal altercation with her mother that became increasingly aggressive to the point of violence.

Howard allegedly began to destroy items in her mother’s home, then charged her. The mother grabbed Howard’s arms to restrain her, but Howard reportedly retaliated by grabbing her mother’s hair, grabbing her arm, and biting her wrist.

Officers on scene observed a visible abrasion where the mother’s arm was grabbed, as well as the beginnings of bruising in the shape of teeth on her wrist.

The two had lived together as recently as three weeks before the alleged incident.

Howard was taken into custody, charged with domestic abuse assault causing injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
