A new Coralville city councilor will begin her temporary term today.
Hai Huynh emerged as the winner over three other candidates for the open seat in Tuesday’s election, garnering over 50 percent of the vote.
A total of 1813 votes were cast, a 14% turnout that auditor Travis Weipert posted was likely the second largest in city history, with 2013 the largest.
Barry Bedford had 644 votes, followed by Nick Burrell with 200 and Heather Seitsinger with 16. Huynh won with 951 votes.
Huynh replaces former councilor Tom Gill, who resigned in June after receiving condemnation from Mayor John Lundell and other members of the city council after calling Black Lives Matter protesters “criminals” at the end of a workshop session.
Huynh has been a Coralville resident for two decades, and has previously served as a community volunteer and paraeducator at Coralville Central Elementary School. She’s currently community projects coordinator for the Coralville Food Pantry. She will take office today and serve the remainder of Gill’s term, which ends December 31st 2021.
