A Coralville man who originally claimed to only having one beer tested over three times the legal limit when arrested for OWI Saturday night.
60-year-old Robert McKinney of Valley View Drive was called in as a reckless driver who allegedly blew a stop sign on North Park Road in Tiffin. He was stopped near Oakdale and North Park at 10:21pm after a deputy witnessed him turning off into a dead end and making a U-turn outside the turning lane.
McKinney reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and delayed movements. He told the deputy that he had had one beer when asked if he had been drinking. There were Miller beer cans allegedly observed under McKinney’s driver’s seat. He attempted field testing but gave up during one part and then reportedly admitted that he was drunk, changing his consumption story to four beers.
McKinney did not wish to continue testing, but submitted to a PBT that showed his blood-alcohol level at .248 percent and a Datamaster showing it at .242 percent.
McKinney had a previous OWI in 2015. He was taken into custody and charged with his second. He could be sentenced to up to two years in prison if convicted.
