The Iowa City Community School District will transition to its hybrid learning model as of September 28th.

That news comes from a district news release issued Friday. The release cites Johnson County’s COVID-19 positivity rate of 8.2%. Positivity rates had reached as high as 20.4% earlier this month.

The high positivity rate forced the Iowa City district to start the school year with at-home learning, with permission from the state. State officials declared that school districts must request a waiver from the state in order to pursue two weeks of online-only classes and must show the positivity rate in their county is at least 15%.

Iowa City was granted a second waiver last week.

The transition only applies to students who opted for standard enrollment during registration. It does not apply to students who have enrolled in the district’s PK-12 Online Learning Program.

The hybrid model has some students inside classrooms on Mondays and Tuesdays and others on Thursdays and Fridays. The two groups alternate Wednesdays, and will learn virtually on the days they aren’t inside the classroom.

The district will begin in-person co-curricular and athletic activities starting Saturday, September 26th. This includes practices and previously scheduled competitions. In addition, the district will once again allow limited spectators at events and will follow the event attendance guidelines published in August. Athletic Directors and coaches will be communicating specific information with their teams.
