Coralville man charged with domestic abuse during Iowa City incident

A Coralville man was taken into custody this week after a domestic incident in Iowa City.

According to police reports, 39-year-old Camilo Samaniego-Moreno of 18th Avenue got into a verbal argument with a woman at her residence on South Lowell Street Tuesday around 4am. She alleges that Samaniego-Moreno got upset, leaned over and began choking her. Lying next to her was her 5-year-old son, who woke up crying.

The woman reported getting dizzy, and told Samaniego-Moreno that she couldn’t breathe. He allegedly told her, “These are the things you make me do.” She tried to call 911 but Samaniego-Moreno grabbed the phone away from her and threatened to assault her.

The woman reports having trouble breathing and swallowing since the incident.

Samaniego-Moreno was taken into custody Thursday night. He’s been charged with Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Airflow, Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury, Child Endangerment, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on all charges, Samaniego-Moreno could be sentenced to over eight years in prison.
