An Iowa City man has been arrested after a domestic assault and alleged theft of a moped.
According to the woman involved, 36-year-old Andrew Pearson showed up on Sunday at about 10pm wanting to be let in her residence. She refused, and said that he slept on the porch.
On Monday afternoon, a witness reportedly observed Pearson taking a moped from behind the residence on the 1000 block of Market Street, and leave it in a driveway on the 1100 block of Rochester Avenue. He then returned to the Market Street address, where the woman let him in to watch two children while she went to get some possessions from a previous residence.
When she returned, she and Pearson allegedly began arguing, and the woman told Pearson to leave. As he was leaving, he attempted to regain entry into the residence, holding the door open. The woman said she hit Pearson, and he grabbed her hands. She then bit Pearson.
They eventually separated and she tried to call 911 but couldn’t find her phone. Her brother arrived and she used his phone to place the call.
Pearson was arrested, and police investigated his alleged moped theft. They discovered that he had no known connection to the registered owner, who reported the vehicle as stolen when police contacted him. The moped has a value of $1700.
Pearson has been charged with 2nd degree Theft, and domestic abuse assault. If convicted, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
