A search warrant executed on an Iowa City home turned up drugs and numerous firearms, leading to the arrest of the resident who claimed he was giving the drugs away for free.
According to University of Iowa Police, officers executed the warrant at the Amhurst Street residence of 33-year-old Corey Fonder just after 9:45am on August 21st. Investigators discovered several mason jars of marijuana, with the marijuana weighing a total of 489 grams. Drug scales, packaging materials, bongs and pipes were also located.
Police also say they found a 9mm Beretta handgun on the top shelf of the master bedroom closet. Two 12-gage shotguns and a Winmag .300 bolt-action rifle were found in a storage unit.
Fonder, who has a felony drug conviction out of South Dakota from 2007, claimed the gun in the closet belonged to his wife, and that he was storing the other guns for friends. He also admitted he provided the drugs to others, but did not allow anyone to pay for them.
Fonder was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 6:30 Saturday morning and charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm By A Felon, a Drug Tax Stamp Violation, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and two Controlled Substance Violations. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 20 years in prison.
