Former Coralville police chief Barry Bedford is running for city council.

Bedford made the announcement on a new “Bedford for Coralville” Facebook page Friday night. He posted, “I look forward to meeting with you, hearing from you, and sharing my vision for our community.”

Bedford is running for an open seat on the council formerly occupied by Dr. Tom Gill, who resigned in July after inflammatory remarks about the Black Lives Matter movement during a council meeting.

Bedford served as Coralville’s police chief from 1988 to 2017, and had served on the police force since 1973.

The special election to fill the open council seat is set for September 29th. 28-year-old Nick Burrell, owner of Versa Fitness, has also announced plans to run, as has Coralville resident Hai Huynh.
