Iowa’s surge in coronavirus cases continues as more than 2,600 more positive cases have been reported, including 500 new cases at the University of Iowa. But state officials say the rise is partly due to adding results of a new testing method.

The state currently shows more than 62,000 people have tested positive in Iowa. There have also been 1,091 deaths, including 12 from Thursday to Friday morning. Gov. Kim Reynolds says much of the state’s surge is due to college-age adults gathering without masks or distancing.

The UI on Friday reported 500 new cases among students during the first week of classes. There were seven new cases among UI employees. Totals for the fall semester so far are 607 cases among students and 11 among staff.

The number of residence hall students in quarantine, meaning they are in self-isolation after possibly having been exposed to someone with COVID-19, is 40. The number in self-isolation, meaning they have tested positive for the virus and are being isolated, is 19.
