Coralville firefighters battled a house fire Friday morning.

Units were called to 718 9th Avenue at approximately 7:45 am. Coralville fire officials say fire damage was contained to the basement, while the remainder of the home sustained heavy smoke damage.

The fire was extinguished about ten minutes after firefighters arrived. Crews remained on the scene until about 10:30 am. Two occupants were home and asleep when the fire broke out. They were awakened by the smell of smoke and were able to escape safely on their own.

The two displaced occupants are being assisted by the Red Cross. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental and is still under investigation. The damage was estimated at around $75,000.

Coralville firefighters were assisted by units from Iowa City and North Liberty.

Investigators say no working smoke detectors were present in the home.
