Weekend events will go on in the Iowa City Community School District this weekend, but spectators will be banned.
That’s according to a news release issued by district officials Thursday afternoon. The move comes after the district was given permission by the state to begin classes for the 2020-21 school year 100% off-site. In a letter to families and staff, district officials say the request to hold at-home classes was submitted Wednesday, and the state granted the request Wednesday night.
The district has had previous requests denied by state Board of Education, but this time the district cited the recent spike in COVID-19 positivity rates in Johnson County, and Iowa City specifically.
The school board will discuss the recent developments and determine the next steps at a special meeting Saturday morning at 9. The letter stresses that they have made no decision to change the start of the school year from its planned September 8th date.
The no spectator rule affects two Friday night football games: West High at Liberty as well as the City High game at Bates Field against Davenport Central. The West/Liberty game can be heard right here on 1630 KCJJ and the City High game will be streamed at thelittlehawk.com.
