Two residents of the Sunrise Village manufactured housing community were arrested overnight in separate drunk driving incidents: one for driving into a neighbor’s yard, another for crashing into a light pole.

The first case occurred just after midnight Monday, when 26-year-old Tyler Thomas of Sunrise Village was arguing with a neighbor. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says the argument escalated, leading to Thomas allegedly driving his vehicle up to the neighbor’s house, damaging items in the yard. Arriving deputies say Thomas showed multiple signs of intoxication, failed field sobriety tests and vomited. His blood alcohol content was measured at .120.

Thomas is charged with Operating While Intoxicated and 5th Degree Criminal Mischief.

Just before 2am Wednesday Iowa City Police were called to a one-vehicle accident at the corner of Court Street and 4th Avenue where a car hit a pole. The reporting party indicated the male driver then left the scene.

Officers located the suspect’s vehicle near the corner of Court Street and Elmridge Avenue. The driver, identified as 19-year-old Ronal Roldan Caceres of Sunrise Village, allegedly had bloodshot eyes and smelled of marijuana. Police say Roldan Caceres initially told them his female passenger had been the one driving at the time his car hit the pole. He later allegedly admitted to driving away from the scene and smoking marijuana shortly before driving.

Police say Roldan Caceres failed field sobriety tests, and a drug recognition expert determined he was too impaired to operate a motor vehicle safely. Roldan Caceres is now charged with OWI.
