FEMA announced that additional federal disaster assistance is now available to Linn County residents as a result of last week’s derecho.

The additional assistance authorizes federal funding to affected individuals in Linn County.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance by registering online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA(3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

FEMA also cautions residents to beware of visits, calls or emails from people claiming to be from FEMA or the State of Iowa asking for personal proprietary information. They say that people have suffered identity theft and/or financial loss in several areas where FEMA has stepped in to help by falling for this scam.

On Monday, the president authorized FEMA money to several counties, but only for emergency work and repair or replacement of government facilities damaged by the storms. He has not fully funded Governor Kim Reynolds’ request for nearly $4 billion in total aid to 27 counties damaged by the high winds associated with the sustained storm.
