A transient panhandler who couldn’t stay away from Iowa City businesses apparently couldn’t go near the Johnson County Courthouse for an initial appearance on a multiple trespassing charges, leading to his arrest.
34-year-old Trell Grant is trespassed from multiple properties on Muscatine Avenue, 1st Avenue and Lower Muscatine Road for aggressively panhandling and banging on car windows asking for money. Police say he skipped his initial May 26th court appearance on eight Trespassing charges, and a warrant was issued for his arrest on Friday. Grant was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 8am Saturday.
Grant was also charged with two more trespassing incidents: One at the 1st Avenue Hy-Vee on the morning of May 26th, the other at the strip mall at 2304 Muscatine Avenue the morning of June 8th.
Trespassing is punishable with a simple fine.
Grant is also facing a 2nd Degree Theft charge after allegedly stealing hundreds of packs of cigarettes from the Lower Muscatine Road Delimart during the overnight hours of June 7th and 8th. If convicted on that charge, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
