The City of Cedar Rapids has updated their storm recovery information, pulling garbage, recycling and yard waste collection crews to instead assist Public Works and Foresty crews with debris removal.
Plans to restore garbage collection will be announced at a future date; once it’s resumed, garbage carts will be prioritized.
Heavy damage was sustained to traffic signals throughout Cedar Rapids; many remain dark or running on generators. Other intersections are missing stop signs altogether. Motorists are being told to treat every dark intersection as a four-way stop.
A Citywide curfew is in effect from 10pm to 6am nightly until further notice. Police will be patrolling neighborhoods.
The city’s first priority is for crews to open roads to traffic and remove hazardous trees and hanging limbs. Crews are placing tree limbs and debris on areas between the street and sidewalks temporarily to help open roads.
Those that are putting their debris out are being told to limit the length of the items to 10 feet or less, and not to mix organic debris with glass, shingles, gutters and the like. Trunks of large diameter need to be halved or quartered so that they can be more easily removed.
The Twin Pines, Ellis, and Gardner Golf Courses are closed until further notice, and the Rollin’ Rec-Mobile that was providing school supplies is off the road until Tuesday August 18th.
Finally, transit services are still suspended and will be back up and running on Thursday.
