The Iowa City Community School District is reopening an investigation into a June 2018 complaint against a teacher who allegedly inappropriately messaged a student over social media.

The Gazette reports that the complaint resurfaced after the student in question made the accusations last week in a social media post.

West High Principal Gregg Shoultz sent an e-mail to families Thursday, saying that the complaint was founded and appropriate action was taken. The teacher’s name was not released.

School administrators have not been made aware of any further inappropriate conduct by the teacher, but the district is reopening its investigation due to renewed interest.

The district’s employee handbook states that communicating with current students through social media could be viewed as inappropriate behavior. Violation of the policy could lead to disciplinary action, including termination.
