When University of Iowa students attend in-person classes this fall, they better have a face covering in place, or they can be asked to immediately leave.

The Daily Iowan reports that faculty will have the ability to impose a one-day suspension from their course to any student to refuses to wear a mask in class.

UI Assistant Dean and Director of Student Accountability Angela Ibrahim-Olin tells the DI that each student will be provided with protective equipment and the university is still working out how it will be distributed.

As far as violating the mask requirement, Ibraham-Olin says faculty and staff have been directed to report any incidents when a student refuses to wear a face covering in a campus building to the Office of Student Accountability. They in turn will meet with the student to determine if a violation occurred, and unspecified disciplinary sanctions will be imposed.

The City of Iowa City issued a face mask mandate on July 21st, and ICPD public information officer Derek Frank tells the Daily Iowan that residents have been extremely mindful of the mandate so far.
