A North Liberty resident was taken into custody Saturday for OWI.

Coralville police say that 24-year-old Archange Nkwono of Churchill Drive left the roadway on the 900 block of 22nd Avenue just before 7pm and nearly struck an apartment building.

When officers made contact with Nkwono, he reportedly smelled of ingested alcohol, had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and impaired balance. A baggie containing a green, leafy substance was allegedly observed in his partially opened pants pocket.

During the ensuing arrest, Nkwono reportedly was resistive with officers, destroying the baggie and its contents. SFST’s showed multiple impairment, and a PBT recorded a blood-alcohol level of .187 percent. The Datamaster reading was .181 percent.

Officers say Nkwono doesn’t have a valid license.

He was taken into custody and charged with OWI First Offense, a serious misdemeanor, and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted, Nkwono could be sentenced to up to 13 months in jail.
