Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation Friday that forces retailers to once again start accepting cans and bottles for deposit redemption, but one grocery store chain is ignoring the order.

Fareway President and CEO Reynolds W. Cramer said in a statement that his stores will defy the governor’s order in order to protect the safety of his workers during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. In the statement, Cramer claims the governor’s order conflicts with an earlier order requiring his stores to follow health and safety guidelines. Individual Fareway stores will be posting a list of nearby locations where bottles and cans may be redeemed.

State law requires stores selling bottles and cans with a five cent deposit to take redemptions.

Friday’s proclamation also extends other requirements, including that bar and restaurant patrons each have seats at a table or bar and that operators maintain “increased hygiene practices.” In addition, the governor’s order extends existing rules for fitness centers, casinos, senior citizen centers and other businesses.
