The mask mandate issued in Iowa City Tuesday is now countywide.

In a unanimous vote Thursday, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors issued their own mandate, which goes into effect immediately.

The mandate mirrors Iowa City’s wording. It specifically mentions that face coverings must be worn at grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores, retail stores, outside if unable to stay six feet away from others, and on public transportation.

There are some places where people would be exempt from the order, including when traveling in a personal vehicle alone or with household members, jogging or biking outside, and in a restaurant while patrons are in the process of eating or drinking.

Children two and younger are exempt.

The resolution cites public health emergency declarations from the United States Department of Health, the State of Iowa, the World Health Organization, and President Trump. It mentions the continuing need for all residents of and visitors to Johnson County to stay safe and follow CDC guidelines to curb the surge in COVID-19 cases.

The resolution specifically says that it is not intended to be punitive or stigmatizing, and is “in the best interest of health, safety and economic recovery.”
