A member of the Iowa City school board says he plans to resign.

Paul Roesler announced on his Facebook page Tuesday that he is leaving his job of 22 years at Scheels to accept a teaching position at Lemme Elementary. He says he will have to resign from the school board, and he told KCJJ he expects his last meeting to be on August 25th.

Roesler says he’s been planning the transition to teaching for about two years, and the pandemic sped up his decision now that the schools will be in need of more substitute teachers.

Roesler was first elected to the school board in 2016. His current term expires in 2023.

The school board has the option of appointing someone to Roesler’s seat within 30 days of his departure, or calling for a special election to fill the rest of his term. State law does not allow the open seat to be included with the November general election.
