Driving at night without his lights on has resulted in a Coralville man’s arrest on several drug charges.

According to police, an officer stopped 28-year-old Dedrick Smith of 6th Street  at the First Avenue and I-80 intersection just before 11:30pm Thursday for driving without his headlights or taillights on. Smith allegedly stopped in the middle of the road, and when contacted, reportedly had slurred speech.

A check of his record showed Smith as revoked since December 26th.

As the officer asked Smith out of the vehicle, he could smell an odor of marijuana inside. A search of the vehicle found a blue plastic bag with 3 grams of marijuana, 3 half tablets of Xanax bars, and a Quetiapine Fumarate tablet in the center console.  Another yellow pill bottle was also reportedly found; that one contained two grams of meth in a clear plastic bag, 2 full and 4 half-tablets of Xanax,  and two  Quetiapine Fumarate tablets inside the driver side door handle.  A marijuana blunt was found inside a cigar wrapper as well.

Smith reportedly told authorities at the Coralville Police Department that he had previously taken Xanax earlier in the evening after he was brought there for further testing.

A check of his record shows two previous OWIs, from Louisiana in 2017 and from Johnson County in April of this year.

Smith was charged with his 3rd OWI, 3rd or subsequent marijuana possession, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, and driving while denied or revoked. If convicted on all counts, Smith could be sentenced to a prison sentence of up to eleven years.
