An Iowa City man who allegedly committed an assault at a downtown bar faces additional charges after giving police a hard time during his arrest.

According to reports, 24-year-old Brandon Ivins of South Governor Street walked up to a group of people at Bo James on East Washington Street just before 1:20am Thursday and struck one of the parties, causing a bruise and small cut to the victim. Police were called to the scene, and located Ivins in the area. Witnesses allegedly identified Ivins as the perpetrator.

When asked to identify himself, he only gave his first name. When asked for his last name, Ivins allegedly stated, “I’ve just been Brandon for a while.” Ivins was asked to stand but he refused. An officer told him he was under arrest and again Ivins refused to stand. He had to be stood up by officers and resisted efforts to get him handcuffed.

Ivins was observed with bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, the odor of ingested alcohol, and impaired balance. He refused to submit to breath testing.

Ivins reportedly refused to get into a squad car until threatened with force. He then placed his foot in the door to prevent it from being closed.

Ivins was taken to the Johnson County Jail and charged with assault causing bodily injury, public intoxication, interference with official acts, and harassment of a public official. If convicted on all counts, he faces a jail sentence of up to 15 months.
