A Coralville woman was taken into custody Monday night after threatening another woman with a handgun.

Arrest reports indicate the incident occurred just after 10pm in the parking lot of the Iowa Lodge on 2nd Street. The victim says she was sitting in her vehicle while 36-year-old Katherine Wells, who lives at that location, was talking with another individual. Wells is then accused of walking around the vehicle she was near with a black handgun in her right hand, raising her arm and pointing the gun directly at the woman.

The woman then left the parking lot and drove directly to the Coralville PD to report the incident. Two other witnesses reportedly were also in the vehicle during the altercation.

Officers went to the scene of the alleged crime, and a witness in the parking lot stated that Wells had a gun, described as a .380 handgun,  and needed to go to jail. They then went to Wells’ apartment and she reportedly told police where the weapon was located. It was discovered to be a black Waither PPK CO2 powered pellet handgun, found under the kitchen sink.

Wells told officers that she was in the lot at the time the assault occurred, saying goodbye to a friend and said it was possible that the victim was also there.

Wells was taken into custody and charged with assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a prison sentence of up to two years if convicted.
