An Iowa City man was taken into custody after allegedly taking cash from a vehicle Thursday morning.
According to arrest reports, 18-year-old Jeiden Fair of Amber Lane was observed by bystanders entering a black Mercedes on the 2000 block of Keokuk Street around 11:25 before he was confronted and fled the area.
The victim said an envelope with about $1200 in cash was stolen from the center console.
Responding officers located Fair nearby and said he matched the description provided by witnesses. When they attempted contact, Fair reportedly fled on foot. He was detained and Mirandized a brief time later.
Post Miranda, Fair allegedly admitted to stealing money in an envelope from a vehicle and being confronted by witnesses. Police found over $300 in cash on Fair and he reportedly said the money was stolen.
He was taken into custody and charged with 3rd degree burglary of a motor vehicle and third degree theft, both aggravated misdemeanors punishable by a total prison sentence of up to four years if Fair is convicted.
