An Iowa City man was taken into custody early Saturday morning after a domestic incident involving his live-in girlfriend.
Police say 40-year-old Xavier Kingtempest of Sunset Street and the woman had a fight at 4:15am, during which Kingtempest approached the girlfriend in a vehicle. He’s accused of strangling her, using his hand against her throat and pushing her against the head rest.
The woman says the alleged strangulation occurred for several seconds, during which she couldn’t breathe and thought she was going to die.
Kingtempest then pulled his girlfriend out of the car and dragged her into their residence by her hair.
Inside, he is accused of taking her car keys and cellphone so that she couldn’t call anyone or leave. He then held her down by her arms. Kingtempest let her up, then cut his wrist with a knife. The woman alleges that Kingtempest thrust the knife at her several times in a threatening manner, and she left the residence, going to a neighbor’s house to call for help.
Kingtempest was arrested, and charged with 2nd offense Domestic Abuse Assault, Domestic Abuse Assault with the use of a Weapon, Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow, and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over nine years in prison.
