An Iowa City man faces several charges after an alleged assault downtown just after Midnight Friday.

Arrest reports indicate that 34-year-old Alonzo Perry of South Lucas Street was witnessed approaching a group of people in front of the US Bank branch on East Washington Street at 12:17am. Perry allegedly immediately punched one of the men in the face, causing injury. He’s then accused of grabbing a woman by the arm and pinning her up against the bank’s ATM. While Perry had her pinned, he allegedly grabbed her around the throat with both hands.

Bystanders were able to pull Perry off the woman, who was reportedly left with scratches and bruises around her throat.

Officers then told Perry that he was going to be placed in custody. He allegedly reacted by pulling away from them and resisting attempts to being handcuffed. Officers were finally able to place Perry in double-locked handcuffs. A search of his person reportedly turned up two ounces of marijuana, and Perry admitted that it was marijuana.

He was taken to the Johnson County Jail and charged with two counts of Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Interference with Official Acts, and Marijuana Possession, 3rd or subsequent offense. If convicted on all counts, Perry could be sentenced to over four years in prison.
