A North Liberty man was taken into custody after allegedly becoming upset about Christmas lights being taken down at his residence.

According to police reports, the woman was taking down Christmas lights in 18-year-old Malik Seven Pierce Yelvington’s room at their residence on Goose Lake Circle just past 7:45am Monday. Yelvington then reportedly got upset and grabbed the woman, struggling with her and causing marks on her right arm.

Other people at the residence held Yelvington down until police arrived, but he spit in the victim’s face while being restrained.

Police say Yelvington had marks near the base of his neck as a result of being restrained. Both Yelvington and the woman are adult family members living in the same household, qualifying as a domestic relationship.

Yelvington was charged with domestic abuse assault causing injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
