Two area grocery store chains are recalling their bagged garden salad products after the US Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control began investigating an outbreak of the intestinal illness Cyclospora in the upper Midwest.
Both the Aldi and HyVee stores have announced the recall, along with Jewel-Osco stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Aldi’s Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad and Hyvee’s store brand Garden Salad are the two products being recalled locally.
Minnesota has had an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, with 13 people coming down with the infection.
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis begin an average of seven days after ingestion of Cyclospora. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis may include: watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, increased gas, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and low-grade fever. If not treated, symptoms can persist for several weeks to a month or more. People who are in poor health or who have weakened immune systems may be at higher risk for severe or prolonged illness.
Consumers who have the products are urged to throw them away or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
